Congratulations on crafting your indie game masterpiece! Now, it's time to shout it from the rooftops. But how do you grab the attention of busy journalists and influencers? That's where a killer press kit comes in. Think of it as your game's first impression, a neatly wrapped package showcasing its essence and enticing journalists to delve deeper.
What is a Press Kit?
A press kit is a collection of promotional materials that provides essential information about your indie game to journalists, influencers, and potential collaborators. It serves as a valuable resource for media outlets to easily access the necessary assets and information to create coverage for your game.
A press kit should be short, allowing the reader to have a general understanding of your game quickly in no more than 5 minutes. Remember that most journalists have tightly packed schedules that create a need to be able to discern an interesting game from an average one, so make sure that you transmit the key elements and feel of your game in a concise and fast way.
Overview Document
The overview document serves as the introduction to your game and should include the key details concisely and compellingly. It should cover the following:
- Game Description: Provide a brief and captivating description of your game, highlighting its unique features, gameplay mechanics, and genre.
- Key Features: Outline the standout features of your game that make it interesting and appealing to players.
- History: A short overview of the story behind the development of the game.
- Platform and Release Information: Indicate the platforms on which the game will be available and the planned release date. Optional: Add the price.
Game Information
This section provides detailed information about your game's mechanics, storyline, and other relevant details. Give only the key elements, do not make these sections too long, ideally no more than 1 short paragraph each, or add them in their own separate section. Include the following:
- Storyline: Summarize the game's plot, setting, and characters. Highlight any unique or captivating elements.
- Gameplay Features: Explain the core gameplay mechanics, objectives, and innovative features that set your game apart.
- Game Modes: Outline the different game modes available, such as single-player, multiplayer, or cooperative.
Visual Assets
Probably the 2nd most important part of the press kit, just behind the game information. Include a collection of high-quality visual assets that showcase the visual style and aesthetics of your game. Do not add low-quality assets, remember that these visuals will give the reader the general feeling of your game, and the quality of them will reflect on the general quality of the game.
- Screenshots: Include a series of captivating screenshots that represent different aspects of your game, highlighting its visuals, gameplay, and key features.
- Concept Art: If available, include concept art that gives a glimpse into the art style and design of your game.
- Logos and Icons: Provide your game's logo and icons in high-resolution formats for media use.
- Trailer or Gameplay Video: Include a well-edited trailer or gameplay video that effectively communicates the essence of your game and its unique selling points.
Press Coverage and Reviews:
Include a section that highlights positive press coverage and reviews your game has received. This section acts as social proof and can build credibility for your game.
- Quotes: Include quotes from reputable gaming publications or influential individuals in the industry that praise your game.
- Awards and Recognition: Showcase any awards or nominations your game has received.
Contact Information
Make it easy for journalists and influencers to reach out to you for further inquiries or interview requests. Double check that the info provided here is all correct, a journalist will most likely not contact twice.
- Press Contact Information: Provide the name, email address, and phone number of the person responsible for press and media communications.
- Social Media and Website Links: Include links to your game's official website and social media profiles, allowing easy access to additional information and updates.
Why is a Press Kit Important?
Creating a press kit is vital because:
- Saves Time: Providing journalists with all the necessary assets and information upfront saves them time in researching and preparing coverage, increasing the likelihood of their engagement.
- Ensures Consistency: By providing well-crafted and consistent information about your game, you maintain control over how it is presented and increase the chances of accurate reporting.
- Increases Visibility: A well-designed press kit increases the likelihood of your game being noticed by journalists and influencers, leading to potential coverage and exposure to a wider audience.
- Professional Image: A comprehensive and well-organized press kit demonstrates professionalism and enhances the credibility of your indie game and studio.
Remember to regularly update your press kit with the latest information, assets, and press coverage to keep it relevant and engaging. By following these tips and creating an informative and visually appealing press kit, you'll increase the chances of your game gaining media attention and reaching a wider audience.
